Update – No New Year Celebrtaion Dubai 2008 – Any hotel found to be violating the rules would be fined, DTCM said.

Posted by 7starsdubai on December 31, 2008

Update Arabian Business Dubai 31. December 2008

“Amid growing confusion about what type of event will be banned, an employee in the Dubai government’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) permission department said all New Year celebrations would be cancelled while no fireworks or outdoor music would be allowed. Any hotel found to be violating the rules would be fined, she said”

All outdoor events to celebrate the New Year in Dubai, including fireworks and loud music, have been banned, following a decision by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to cancel all events.

According to Sheikh Mohammed’s order, Dubai will mark the New Year with a “sombre tone” as a token of solidarity with the Palestinian people in general and Gaza Strip in particular which is currently under the barrage of Israeli’s military fire.
Arabian Business has contacted a number of hotels and party organisers who have had to cancel events or move them inside.
Amid growing confusion about what type of event will be banned, an employee in the Dubai government’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) permission department said all New Year celebrations would be cancelled while no fireworks or outdoor music would be allowed. Any hotel found to be violating the rules would be fined, she said.

“If it’s a normal dinner, for instance people have booked it three months in advance, in a hotel that’s fine, but if it’s specifically a New Year’s party – that should be cancelled. If hotels fail to adhere to those rules they will be fined,” she added.

The newly opened Atlantis Hotel on the Palm, whose lavish opening party was watched by millions across the world last month, has cancelled its fireworks display due to start at midnight.

Le Meridien Dubai, near the airport, confirmed that its outdoor event would be moved inside the Great Ball Room for the celebrations while all other events will continue as planned.

A number of hotels, including the Burj Al Arab, Jumeirah Beach Hotel and the Madinat Jumeirah told Arabian Business on Wednesday morning that managers were in meetings and a decision on whether their New Year activities would go ahead would be made later in the day.

Tour operator Desert Safari Dubai said it had cancelled all its New Year parties until an announcement by the government later on Wednesday morning.
The group was offering a New Years Eve Desert Safari and a Dhow Dinner Cruise along the creek. Customers will get a full refund if the trips do not go ahead.

At the Irish Village in Garhoud live music has been cancelled and dancing banned.

Those who bought a ticket will receive free food and be able to buy alcoholic drinks as normal. Background music will be played at a low volume.

Food and beverages manager Dave Cattanach said he had received the guidelines from the Dubai Tourist Board earlier this morning. “We have to follow the rules. All we are concerned with now is looking after our customers.”

Tickets, which cost between 250 dirhams and 300 dirhams are refundable. Alternatively, customers can buy food and alcohol to the face value of the ticket tonight and for the next six months.

Century Village’s street party has been cancelled and the all you can eat and drink packages have been replaced with seperate food and beverage bills.

Those who had already paid 750 dirhams to eat at the Da Gama Resturant have been told they will be refunded next week if they no longer want to attend.

A member of staff at Dubai Marine Resort where guests have paid up to 2,000 dirhams each to attend the hotel’s Gala Dinner, told Arabian Business that the hotel was still waiting for official confirmation but had been advised to dispense of decorations and fireworks and keep noise to a minimum.

Meanwhile, Egypt has also cancelled official New Year’s Eve events in solidarity with the suffering of the Palestinians being “massacred” in Gaza, the state-owned Al-Ahram daily reported on Wednesday.

“In solidarity with the painful events in the Palestinian territories and the massacres which Gazans are faced with … the ministries of culture and information have decided to cancel New Year’s festivities,” the paper said.

Cancelled events include a special concert by famed Egyptian singer Mohammed Munir set to be held at Cairo’s Opera House and a variety performance hosted by the ministry of information due to be broadcast on state television.

Egyptian state television official Ossama al-Sheikh said on Tuesday that the launch of new channel “Nile Comedy,” set for January 1, would be delayed “out of solidarity with the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.”

In Jordan several five-star hotels and restaurants in the capital Amman and other cities including the ancient Nabataean city of Petra and the Red Sea port of Aqaba, cancelled New Year celebrations.

“The decision to cancel the celebrations has been taken in solidarity with our people in Gaza,” Michel Nazzal, head of the Jordanian Hotel Association, said in a statement.

Praveen – have you been drinking?

“Hamas is causing all the trouble”? What are you on? It is not Hamas that is killing hundreds of people with sophisticated weapons my friend, it is the Israelis who operate with no danger of being censored by the US. To say that it is all the fault of Hamas is to be myopic in the extreme.

Happy New Year

Well done to everyone posting comments.
Happy New Year, lets look forward to peace and prosperity in 2009.
It is only sad that today it was announced that we should offer support to the Palestinians only. What about the African nations – Zimbabwe or Somalia? What about Iraq? What about Afganistan? What about Isreal? What about all the other people living in fear tonight? Those which have been trafficked?

Stopping a celebration (for those following the gregorian calander) in Dubai for only one very small part of this planet; suffering at the moment, is not understandable and belittles all the millions of other people suffering else where.

All it will do is have a negative effect on tourism to the region for the foreseable future…

Happy New Year…

Dubai needs to make it’s mind up

Whilst the current events in Gaza are an appalling act of state aggression at its very worst, I am bewildered by the announcement.
I live in Dubai & personally do not care if the New Year events are cancelled, but I think this is very negative for the image of Dubai. Many people will have travelled from all corners of the globe to celebrate New Year, encouraged to do by exotic advertisements.
To take a decision like this hours before the event will achieve nothing other than damage a tourism sector already reeling from the worlds economic woes.

Way to Go beloved Sheikh Mohamed

This is a great decision, if they beat us on the military level, they can never on the psychological level. This great decision has certainly attracted the attention of millions of people in the Gulf most of whom are expatriots. How can one be happy, when human beings are being massacred. Strength begins in the mind and heart, and our hearts should never be deviated from injustice so as not to empower it.

Festivities cancelled

A very wise decision to show our concern and sympathy with our brothers…even the shopping festival SHOULD be cancelled..its not fair to have festivals when our Muslim brothers are dying in hundreds.

Here we go again

Not sure what brought on Shk. Mo. to actually do this, he’s usually not the type. I would say, he’s unlike the other Gulf country leaders who only pay lip service to conflicts in the ME region, he actually tries to do something about it, at least by sending aid. But this decision to stop celebrations is not going to get anyone’s attention, neither Israel’s nor Hamas.
If you look at the papers from the 14th of this month, you will see that Hamas is causing all this trouble by sending rockets into Israel, Israel just sat back and waited for it to stop, but it didn’t, which is when they began hitting back only on the 26th!!!
So if peace needs to come to this region, Hamas needs to be removed and the Palestinian people need to help towards this cause.
Because Hamas is causing Palestine’s destruction, no one else.

Fun gone

Whilst we all sympathise with what’s happening in Gaza, by holding events indoors rather than outside is not going to change anything. When people are toasting the New Year at a dinner table inside a hotel, they’re hardly going to be thinking about Palestinians. This last minute decision has caused people major hassle, reorganising plans, costing innocent businesses money.

The price of a life

Critics of Dubai seem to have multiplied across the globe but this is one decision no one should ever criticise. Condemnation of Israel has never achieved anything, they will continue regardless. So what is left? Even the smallest action, when done in numbers can have an effect. It may only be symbolic but it sends a clear message than many will hear across the world.
A great leader one said that Arab blood should never be cheaper than oil, it most definitely should never be cheaper than alcohol!
God bless you Sheikh Mohammed for this decision.

new year festivities cancelled

really this is the least we can do to show our respect to those who are suffering in Gaza. It wont do them any good in material terms but at least it will indicate that their issues are being raised globally.

cancel NYE?

I personally think it should be down to individual choice as to if someone chooses to enter 2009 quietly because of the conflict or celebrate 2008 / 2009. Everyone was born with a conscience and they should be given the right to use it for themselves.

No new year in Dubai

I don’t agree – it’s not about business only and that it’s great if the hotels etc don;t make as much money as always. What about the people who have planned to go out tonight and have some fun. They are looking forward to bringing in the New Year with friends, family and whole lots of fun – so why should they be punished.
Amnd anyhow the decsion to do this is clearly political follwoing the GCC meet.

New Years Eve

Whilst having enormous sympathy for the Palestinian people, it is interesting that there was no announcement for the Hijiri new year even though the attacks had started at that time. Why is only Dubai cancelling functions? There are other emirates that make up this country and yet they have made no announcements. The attacks have been going on for five days and surely an announcement could have been made earlier to allow people to make alternate arrangements in other Emirates……yes Shakira is still perfoming tonight in Abu Dhabi.

H H Sheikh is the true hallmark of Leadership

By showing solidarity, protesting non violently to the incidents in Gaza, The leader has yet again underlined his personality and conviction that even difficult times would not hamper the confidence and mettle of this great leader who reflects resilience with tenacity. Long way ..Long live Highness Sheikh

Thank you Cheikh Mohammed

Thank you Sheikh Mohammed for your great and right decision. How can we celebrate the New Year when innocent people and Children are killed without any hesitation by the Israeli army? It’s a big shame for the countries that are supporting Israel in this massacre, it’s a big shame for the West and their Human Rights. What is happening today in Ghaza is the same what happened to US on 09/11; so where is the justice of the West?

stop hamas

To al the people who agree with the decision to cancel new year, well honestly i dont really care, what i find strange is that instead of talking about doing something, the arab world should step in and stop HAMAS, who are the ones that are affecting the palestinian people. Get them to stop the attacks on whatever they can hit and this will allow peace in the region. I can only wish and hope for a palestinain state and i am sure it will eventuate, however the only way for this is to stop the people who are really hurting palestine and thats not Isreal it HAMAS.
